a) Who can use home laser hair removal devices?

The home laser devices most commonly purchased use IPL technology. Professional IPL can treat skin types 1-5. Personal home IPL devices can treat skin types 1-3. There are home devices marketed as ‘Diode' laser technology and claim to treat skin types 1-4. Further advancements in technology such as RPL claim to treat up to skin type 5. We should, however, consider who is most suitable for IPL and yields greater results.

Typically, home hair removal devices are not suitable for dark/deep skin. There are a few exceptions of which I will list.

b) Can laser hair removal devices at home replace professional treatments?

IPL is often not considered as effective as laser for professional hair removal. We should always consider longevity and regrow and not just quick results. It is always worth paying for professional laser treatment for hair removal. If you receive treatments professionally, it may be worth investing as a maintenance device or something to try before investing in professional treatments. More than anything, it's an option, something to try.

Crucially though, you shouldn't base your views on laser hair removal from using these types of devices. They can cost less than £100 whereas a professional IPL device can cost £5000. A medical-grade laser can cost £40,000. Results shouldn't be compared. Practitioners are required to hold a minimum level of qualification/training to operate. The same technologies would not be given to general members of the public.

IPL is most effective on light to medium skin tones with hair ranging from blonde to dark brown or black. Where advised suitable in darker skin, skin type 5 should approach with caution. Skin type 6 should never attempt to use these devices. They are pigment targeting which can cause significant skin damage and burns. Darker skin can achieve incredible results through Laser hair removal
